5 Very Early Symptoms Of Pregnancy-Before A Missed Period

Feb 02, 2011 1,020 Comments by

When most women think about very early symptoms of pregnancy, they automatically assume that a missed period is the top symptom.

Would you be surprised that a missed period isn’t even in the top 5 very early symptoms of pregnancy?

By the time a woman has noticed a missed period due to a pregnancy, at least 5 other symptoms may have made themselves known, possibly weeks before the scheduled period. Here are five very early signs of pregnancy that can be noticed by a sensitive mother-to-be. And, all five can happen long before a period has been missed.

1.Elevated Basal Body Temperature. The body’s basal  temperature (the lowest body temperature that happens during rest) begins to elevate after ovulation, and stays  elevated beyond your next expected period. Ovulation is when a mature egg is released  from the ovary and pushed down the fallopian tube and is ready to be fertilized by a sperm.

The implantation of a fertilized egg normally takes place 6 to 12 days after ovulation – that’s about two to three weeks before the next period is missed. This one-half to one degree Fahrenheit increase in basal body temperature  is a subtle early warning sign of pregnancy. This change in basal body temperature, which is measured by a special, more accurate thermometer, can happen as early as two days after ovulation. And, that can be two weeks before you notice a missed period.

2.Breast Tenderness, Nipple Enlargement And Increased Breast Size. Changes and increased swelling and tenderness in the breast and nipples are one of the classic very early signs of pregnancy. Many times, a woman may notice these changes and blame them on a particularly ill-fitting or uncomfortable bra or other article of clothing. But, the sensitive woman will notice these changes for what they are – a new life is beginning to grow inside her with the new pregnancy.

Nipples, particularly the dark area around the nipple called the areola, enlarge and darken in anticipation of breastfeeding the new infant. These changes are due almost entirely to hormone releases in the body, all in anticipation of sustaining the new life within. Some experts say the darkening of the areolas serves a purpose – helping the newly born child find the nipple easier for feeding. These changes to the breast and nipple areas should return to normal after birth.

3.Nausea And Vomiting. Also known as “morning sickness,” this early and uncomfortable sign of pregnancy usually targets women and begins around the sixth week of pregnancy, but often occurs earlier. About half of all expecting mothers have morning sickness – which may or may not include vomiting. But, it usually always features nausea. Often attributed to increased hormone levels in the body, some doctors feel that morning sickness is a good sign that the baby is healthy and is developing normally, and the pregnancy is progressing well.

If your morning sickness is accompanied with vomiting, be  sure to stay hydrated, keep your electrolyte levels within range and get plenty of rest and nap throughout the day.

4.Constipation. Another subtle and often overlooked pregnancy clue is constipation – defined as less that three bowel movements per week. Who doesn’t get constipated at one time or another – without being pregnant?

The constantly changing level of the hormone progesterone, which slows down the movement of food through your digestive system, can wreak havoc with the frequency and timing of bowel movements.  Many women who are pregnant but don’t realize it may just write constipation off as an unrelated, and irritating issue. Like changes in the breasts, paying close attention here really can make tell a story.

5.Fatigue And Exhaustion. There is a big difference between fatigue and tiredness. Feeling tired and sleepy after a long day’s work is completely normal and expected. Sleep, which usually happens after tiredness, is the remedy for a body needing rest, as sleep allows the body to repair itself and ready itself for another hard day.

Fatigue, on the other hand, is not a normal bodily function and is usually a sign of some other condition. Technically speaking, fatigue really has nothing to do with a tired body, as sleep will not normally resolve fatigue. Fatigue can be a sign of disease such as certain cancers, auto-immune disorders and a host of other conditions – including pregnancy.Fatigue can also be a sure sign of an early pregnancy, usually occurring during the first trimester and often partially blamed on a dramatic rise in the level of the hormone progesterone. Pregnancy also can put a huge strain on every bodily function – it’s no wonder that you may feel totally exhausted before the day is through.

Are you experiencing one or more of these very early symptoms of pregnancy? If you have even the slightest idea that you may be pregnant, get a home pregnancy test from your local drug store and test yourself. Then, you’ll know for sure and if positive, you can then notify your doctor and start taking care of your new baby.

i recently turned 16 years old…and my ex and i had sex b4 we broke up about 8 days ago…ive begun throwing up and peeing a lot and i get super-bad headaches…how long should it be b4 i can take a pregnancy test???

  2. Confused says:

I would be so greatful for a reply.

I recently quick started birth control this month. 5 days into taking the birth control I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend of 3 years and he ejaculated inside of me. This happened 16 days ago. Around 5 days ago I had light spotting. About 3 days ago I developed really intense bloating and cramping. My breasts are burning and my nipples have gotten a very dark brown color. Im nauseated by many foods and especially smells. From belly button down my stomach feels odd, cramped. Is there a possibility that I am pregnant? My period should start in about 5 days. Is this just my body adjusting to birth control or am I pregnant?

    • Chayna says:

You should be pregnant but if you are you didn’t take the birth control the right way

    • hope it helped says:

Usually when it comes to birth control they want you to wait more than five days to have sex.. the birth control causes a mucus to form near your cervix to help keep you from becoming pregnant. But that process takes a little time, which is why they asked you to wait to have sex for a certain period of time. I would wait to see if you miss your period and take a pregnancy test.. or to visit the doctor.

  3. Confused says:

Also, I took 2 birth control tests about 4 days ago and both came out negative.

    • Julz says:

Birth control often works by tricking the body into thinking it’s pregnant. If you don’t get your period on schedule, make a doctor’s appointment just to be safe.

Ok so I am wondering if I may be pregnant, I had my period on time last month but it only lasted for 3 days and usually its 5, then about a week or so ago I started having a pink tint to my discharge kind of like I was spotting and that only lasted for a few days as well. I have also been having slight cramps in my lower abdomen which are nothing like my period cramps. I have headaches everyday which is not normal for me, I think my breast are tender but not sure because I just bought a new bra about a month ago. I am tired all day but I seem to get a burst of energy at night, but I have 2 other kids so I just assumed that they were exhausting me lol I am not due for my period for another week and a half and I took a preg test a few days ago and it was neg With my first pregnancy I didn’t even notice I was pregnant until almost my 2nd trimester because I still had minor periods which at that time was normal, and my second pregnancy I found out at 3 weeks but only because I got sick one time at work and because I worked in In Home Health they made me go to the doctor. So basically what I am saying is I never had any symptoms with my first 2 but this time its a very strange experience, I just feel like I am but don’t want to get to excited about it. Anyone have any helpful answers or similar experience and found out you are pregnant?

A week ago my boyfriend took my virginity. Well he only put it in a had a few thrusts and then he put on a condom but before we could cum we were walked in on and had to stop. The same day I started my period five days before I was supposed to and it stopped two days ago from today. I have only had one cup of dr. Pepper today yet I have been to the bathroom to pee five times today and it’s not short little tinkles either. My friend thinks I’m pregnant. What do you think?

  15. henry carlos says:

Wel,if you had unprotected sex 3 days before ,during and 2 days after ovulation..,that should give you a hint because pregnancy can occur

  16. Food For Thought says:

To everyone with symptoms and wondering if they’re pregnant: TEST. If it’s negative and you don’t believe it, TEST AGAIN. Go to the doctor’s office, anything! Even the Dollar Tree tests are sensitive enough to detect early pregnancy (before you miss a period.) I know because I’ve used them and gotten positive results 9 dpo (days past ovulation.) No one here can tell you if you are or are not pregnant, but peeing on a stick will. Have fun!! :)

about a week after I got off my period this month my boyfriend and I had sex and he pulled out but ive had extreme fatigue, dizziness, mood swing, I cant eat more then a few bites of food without feeling nauseous, ive noticed a change in vaginal discharge and today my nipples are sore. I have a nine month old and I didn’t have any symptoms with him. I shouldn’t start my period until around the 10th of January. I haven’t taken a home test yet. I was wondering if anyone could please help me??? or tell me when I should take a test??

  18. Joan says:

After my miscarriage in April I had a Mirena IUD implanted, I had it for about 8 months before having it removed. I got it taken out in January. My fiance & I have been having safe sex, except for once. In which he still did not ejaculate inside of me. My last period ended on Feb 13th. I’ve been nauseous almost everyday for the past week, I’ve been dizzy, constantly hungry, bloated, and I’ve been having lower back and lower abdominal pain. Also, the last time my fiance & I had sex was painful during and afterwards. One of my best friends is pregnant and said she also had pain during and after sex before she found out she was pregnant. I need help.. I took a test yesterday but it came out negative. I just want opinions before I decide to leave for a new job that’s 5 hours away.

  19. fia says:

I also having some of the symptoms like breast tenderness. I went to an OBGYNE for check up and i undergone ultrasound and she said im not pregnant and my menstruation will come anytime soon, she prescribed me to take provera for 10 days and be back on on the first day of my menstruation for another check up. before i took the medicine i had a home pregnancy test and it was positive. I am confuse how it happens that the doctor said i am not pregnant in contrary to the result of the pregnancy test. A day after I took another pregnancy test, then its positive again..is it possible that i am pregnant and the doctor was incorrect in giving me information?

    thanks

  20. Maya says:

You are pregnant! It is extraordinarily unlikely that you would get even one false positive on a home pregnancy test, much less two. The levels of the pregnancy hormone that the tests detect must have increased in your body between the time of your doctor’s visit and the time you took the test. During very early pregnancy these levels start out very low but quickly start to increase day by day. An ultrasound will not detect a very early pregnancy. If you have any doubt in your mind, make another appointment with your ob gyn to confirm your pregnancy.

Same for me, went to the DR cause i was sick, had a preg test done they said i wasn’t, later took home preg test and was positive, so yes DR’s can be wrong, or there test just aren’t as acurate as they think, some meds they want to give a woman for a sickness may not be safe to take while prego..
